Emqopter develops autonomy technology for drones: in-house flight control, sensors and software – tailored to each project, redundant by design, with no data leaving the system. Engineered in Würzburg, Germany.

About Emqopter

About Emqopter

Emqopter GmbH, based in Würzburg, develops autonomy technology for unmanned aerial systems: its own embedded platform (EMQ Control), sensors for situational awareness and the software for autonomous control. Another strength is the in-house design of hardware components – which lets us respond quickly and flexibly to individual and changing requirements. The focus is on full autonomy, reliability and fail-safety – made in Germany.

On this basis Emqopter builds the open-source Quadrotor Control System (QCS) teaching system for universities, the Q-series development platforms for research and development, and the fully autonomous delivery drone and the drone port for industry and logistics. In addition, we offer classic engineering as a development service – from adapting existing systems to a custom-built drone.

Every system is tailored to the requirements of the project – sensors, payload, computing power and interfaces. For use in the field, the platforms can be operated redundantly with a second, proven flight controller; on request all systems run entirely locally, without any cloud connection – telemetry and control data stay with the customer. Emqopter GmbH was founded in 2016 as a spin-off of the Chair of Aerospace Information Technology at the University of Würzburg; the core team has been working on autonomous multicopters since 2010. The managing directors are Dr. Nils Gageik and Marvin Bihl.

Our history

Team history of Emqopter

In 2010, managing director Dr. Gageik began his doctorate on the topic of "Autonomous quadrocopters for indoor exploration". For this purpose, the project "AQopterI8" was founded at the Chair of Aerospace Information Technology at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. Almost 50 student theses and projects contributed to the doctorate. In 2014 the project was awarded the University Sponsorship Award of the Mainfranken business community (Universitätsförderpreis der Mainfränkischen Wirtschaft). With the help of this award, the foundations for Emqopter's Quanipulator were laid.

Upon completion of Dr. Gageik's doctorate, an EXIST grant for the foundation of Emqopter GmbH was successfully acquired in 2016.

Mission statement

Our company's mission statement

We develop and build flying robots and their components as autonomous technical solutions for carrying out special tasks and work as well as for education and research. We want flying robots to help us in everyday life by performing dangerous, unpleasant or heavy work faster, more reliably, more safely and more cost-effectively (conserving resources). The goal is, much like the tractor that freed us from hard physical field work, to increase quality of life and to create prosperity, room for creativity and the opportunity for self-fulfilment for us and our fellow human beings. That is why we place the greatest possible value on quality, sustainability, safety and fair working conditions in all our products and activities.

Research & cooperation

Research together – with universities, institutes and companies

As a spin-off of the University of Würzburg, research is part of our DNA. In publicly funded joint projects – such as ZIM, mFUND, dtec.bw or programmes of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs – we work with universities, research institutions and industrial partners on new applications for autonomous flying robots: from sensor placement on overhead power lines (DNeD) and drones in the logistics network (FlowPro) to autonomous surveying in post-mining areas (TAGEBAU).

We contribute airworthy platforms, the open EMQ Control flight controller, sensor integration and autonomy software. Do you have a research question, a project idea or are you looking for a partner for a proposal? Get in touch – we are also open to supervised theses and industrial cooperations.
